What probably started out as a joke in some shady bar on the outskirts of Massachusetts U.S. has today gained mainstream consciousness. Utter nonsensical and highly impractical, this analogy has now gained such prominence in the Indian electrical engineering space that even the basic electrical courses books find its mention. How did this happen? – or should I ask why did this happen? A classic case of “disinformation” or an incorrect information copied by multiple sources mostly over the Internet, without any background check which then becomes mainstream with multiple links displaying the same result might be a cause. The analogy illustrates a glass of beer with its forth labelled as reactive power, the sparkling golden liquid as active power and the entire content of the glass as apparent power.
Charles ‘Proteus’ Stienmetz would have killed himself. It might seem like complex numbers, phasors, and other such abstract concepts of math are worthless ! René Descartes, Leonard Euler, de Moivre, Laplace, Fourier Stienmetz & other legends were fools who probably didn’t drink beer!
