Fresh water is expected to become increasingly scarce as temperature and sea levels rise due to
Global Climate Change. We believe now is the time to start rethinking our behaviors in terms
of water use and start conserving water even if it is on a small scale. One of the best ways to
conserve water is to install small scale rainwater harvesting system. Any city building can be
used to utilize to collect rainwater using rain barrels/water tanks. The water can be used to
irrigate flowerbeds, washing and cleaning and/or storage for future use. The project is relatively
low cost, costing approximately INR 20/- per sqft. An example of a system:
The dimensions for our collection area in the figure are 91.38 feet by 15.76 feet and 15.56 feet by
27.76 feet is capable of harvesting more than 2,000 litre from one inch of rain. It is sufficient of
ten, 350 litre water barrels to harvest rain water during the peak rain seasons of June extending
till September (in Bhopal)
